Personal Statement

Congratulations on taking the first step in making changes in your life. Let me tell you a little about myself and then I'll tell you a little about the counseling process and hopefully help you decide if counseling is the right choice for you.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with 4 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families. I graduated with my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from my hometown college of Northeastern State University in 2006, then had the opportunity to learn from and practice with some of the best counselors and psychologists in Tulsa, OK. I work with children, teens, and adults of all ages providing counseling for a variety of different problems or concerns.

I work from a strength based approach, which means I focus on client strengths to help them solve their own problems. Counseling is generally brief (any where from a few sessions to several months, depending upon the issues). I also work from a cognitive perspective, which means focusing on how our thought processes affect feelings and actions. A thorough assessment is usually completed in the first session which includes identifying any past history or issues that are creating problem patterns or behaviors. Therapy is also goal-directed, meaning after a thorough assessment client and therapist will determine specific goals for treatment and treatment will be planned with those goals in mind.

Common Concerns Addressed in Treatment with Me Include:

Individuals: Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Relationship Issues, Work Frustrations, Grief Counseling, Anger Management, Abusive Pasts, Identity Issues.

Couples: Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution, Infidelity, Financial Stress, Intimacy Issues.

Families: Communication, Blended Family Issues, Parenting, Adolescent Concerns, Relationship Conflict, Divorce Adjustment.

Children: Behavior Problems, School Issues, ADHD, Trauma.

Specialties:

I am trained in providing PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy) - an empirically-supported treatment for conduct-disordered young children that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. In PCIT, parents are taught specific skills to establish a nurturing and secure relationship with their child while increasing their child’s prosocial behavior and decreasing negative behavior.

I am trained in Clinical Hypnotherapy, which offers a unique guided relaxation technique to provide skills and empowerment to change certain negative behavior patterns. This approach is used upon request only. Full details would be explained prior to participation. Below is a list of legitimate uses of Hypnotherapy, as defined by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, an organization sanctioned by the American Psychology Association:

  • Anxiety and Stress Management
  • Concentration
  • Depression
  • Sports & Athletic Performance
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Test taking Anxiety
  • Obesity & Weight Control

I am also trained in Psychological First Aide, which enables me to perform crisis intervention counseling for such things as natural disasters or other traumatic events affecting large groups of individuals or organizations.
